Point Bye: A 655-WHP Mustang Built for More Than Straight Lines

There are plenty of 5.0 Mustangs making big power. Point Bye was built to do something more with it.  This 2016 Ford Mustang combines 655 horsepower at the tires with a chassis built around serious track use, substantial cooling upgrades, big brakes, wide tires, and enough aero to make the package work at speed. At the same time, the car retains the finish and detail of a show-quality build, with custom paint, exposed carbon fiber, and an interior that carries the exterior theme throughout the car.  The result is a Mustang that looks the part standing still but was built around what happens when the track goes green.

Body and Aero

Point Bye immediately separates itself from a typical S550 with a custom finish by Gordon Automotive Specialties combining Ford Magnetic Gray with Mopar Plum Crazy Purple.  Anderson Composites dry-carbon doors and fenders retain exposed carbon as part of the design, while a M&P Concepts GT500-style front bumper was heavily modified to work with the performance package underneath it. Portions of the bumper were cut and replaced with mesh to increase airflow through the intercooler while also providing the clearance needed for the intercooler installation.

A custom front splitter uses Professional Awesome splitter mounts and support rods, while the rear is finished with a 9 Lives Racing wing painted to match the car. Rather than using the standard mounting arrangement, custom laser-cut wing mounts were fabricated for the installation.  TrackSpec hood vents provide additional heat extraction while being painted to integrate with the overall theme. A custom tubular front crash bar replaces the original structure and provides additional room behind the modified front bumper.

Engine and Driveline

Under the hood is Ford's 5.0-liter Coyote with MMR oil pump gears and GT500 valve and coil covers.  The cooling and oiling systems received considerable attention. A Fluidyne radiator works with custom-built ducting to direct airflow through the cooling stack, while a G Plus oil cooler and custom oil-filter relocation setup help manage engine-oil temperatures. A Moroso coolant expansion tank replaces the factory unit.  Fuel is supplied through DeatschWerks 1000cc injectors and dual 400-lph pumps mounted in a DeatschWerks fuel hat. The car has also been converted to a return-style fuel system to support the increased fuel demand.

Power goes through a Ben Calimer Stage 3 MT82 manual transmission. A Prothane transmission mount and BMR adjustable engine mounts help control drivetrain movement, while a JXB carrier bearing supports the driveshaft.  Out back, an OS Giken differential works with Ford Performance 3.55 gears and GT350 axles.  With the combination dialed in on the dyno, Point Bye makes 655 horsepower at the tires.

Supercharger, Intake and Exhaust

Boost comes from a TorqStorm 84mm supercharger feeding a Treadstone intercooler through custom-fabricated hot- and cold-side charge piping.  Boost control is handled by a Turbosmart eBoost2, which allows the car to use different boost levels and boost-by-gear strategies rather than simply sending full power to the tires in every gear.  On the intake side, Point Bye uses a GT350 intake manifold and GT350 throttle body.

Exhaust starts with Kooks 2-inch long-tube headers and continues through a Mishimoto H-pipe and Hooker BlackHeart mufflers.  The finished combination provides the airflow and fuel capacity needed to support the 655-whp output without turning the engine bay into an unnecessarily complicated package.

Suspension and Chassis

Point Bye's suspension was built around track performance rather than simply lowering the car.  MCS adjustable coilovers are used at all four corners with Vorshlag Motorsports caster/camber plates up front. The body was modified to allow the front alignment to reach approximately -4.5 degrees of camber.  Steeda lateral and tension arms with heim joints replace the factory front components, while the rear uses SPL adjustable camber arms and SPL toe links with eccentric lockouts.  Steeda Hardcore subframe bushings reduce movement between the rear subframe and chassis, while BMR 25mm front and rear sway bars work with custom-built end links.  Together, the combination provides control over camber, toe, suspension movement, and chassis balance instead of trying to make one fixed setup work for every situation.

Wheels and Brakes

Point Bye runs Apex SM-10 wheels measuring 19x11.5 paired with Yokohama Advan A052 tires.  Braking is handled by Wilwood at all four corners. Aero6 calipers are used up front with Forged Superlite calipers in the rear, paired with 14-inch two-piece Wilwood rotors.  The wide Apex wheels and A052s give the Mustang the mechanical grip needed to take advantage of the suspension package, while the Wilwood system provides the braking capacity necessary for repeated track use.

Interior and Safety

The Plum Crazy Purple theme continues inside the car with an MSR Performance six-point roll bar painted to match the exterior accents. Gordon Automotive Specialties also refinished the dash panels and trim rings in Magnetic Gray with Plum Crazy Purple accents, tying the interior directly into the exterior design.

Sparco Grid II fixed-back seats and G-Force harnesses keep the occupants planted, while a Competition Orange shift knob adds another small Ford-inspired detail.  The rear seats were removed and replaced with a custom vinyl-covered rear-seat-delete panel. The same material carries into the trunk, where a custom spare-tire cover gives the rear of the car a finished appearance instead of leaving it looking stripped.

An Element fire extinguisher is mounted inside the car, while Scott Drake black pedal covers complete the driver controls.

Electronics

Point Bye retains more street-car functionality than the exterior and track setup might suggest.  A Pioneer head unit works with Scosche touchscreen HVAC controls, while an AutoBlip system provides automated throttle blipping during downshifts.  The Turbosmart eBoost2 controller is mounted inside the cabin for boost management.  Lighting includes Diode Dynamics Demon Eyes along with XK Glow underglow and fiber-optic interior accents.  The result is an interior that still feels finished and intentional rather than like a street car that was simply gutted to go racing.

The Complete Package

Point Bye is not just a supercharged Mustang with a suspension underneath it.  The 655-whp Coyote gets most of the attention, but the rest of the car was built to support it. MCS suspension, extensive Steeda and SPL chassis components, 19x11.5 Apex wheels, A052 tires, Wilwood brakes, additional cooling capacity, functional aero, and a properly supported driveline all work together to make the power usable.

Gordon Automotive Specialties' custom Magnetic Gray and Plum Crazy Purple finish, exposed carbon fiber, matching interior work, and custom fabrication give Point Bye an identity that is unmistakably its own.

It is equal parts track car, street car, and showpiece—and it was built so none of those three had to compromise the other two.
